What about the AF-S Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D? This is a lovely lens that adapts well to film and digital bodies. It's a bit of a pig to manually focus on a non-AF body like my FE2, but it totally shines on my F80 or D700. I've had great success shooting car shows with this lens, getting really close and able to play up the distortion inherent in super wide focal lengths.
